CLOTH NAPPIES : Washing nappies

Washing nappies at Green Mums

If you would like to know about how to wash nappies, please have a look at our article what to do with a dirty/wet nappy! or feel free to contact us for advice.  When washing nappies always use only a small amount of washing powder - about a 1/3rd of your usual amount and never use fabric conditioner as this will gradually affect the absorbency of the fabric.  There is no need to use a nappy soak, in fact this can damage the fibres of some modern nappies.

We have listed here some environmentally friendly laundry products which will enable you to be even kinder to the planet when washing your nappies.

Dryer Balls
DRYBALL

These non-toxic and allergy free balls will soften your laundry in an environmentally friendly way, without the use of fabric conditioner. (You should not use fabric conditioners with cloth nappies as it will affect the absorbency). Just place 2 Dryerballs in the drum of your tumble dryer with your wash. Dryerballs have been scientifically tested and proven to soften fabric, reduce drying time by 25%, make ironing easier and reduce lint and static.

ECOBALLS
Eco Balls

Ecoballs® are natural, environmentally friendly, efficient and cost-effective, and deliver a clean, fresh, sensitive alternative to conventional washing powders that pollute our water supply and reduce the lifespan of our washing machine.

Environmentally friendy eco balls are a scientific breakthrough in cleaning technology. Just place the three eco balls in your washing machine instead of detergent. Together they produce ionized oxygen that activates the water molecules naturally and allows them to penetrate deep into clothing fibres to lift dirt away. They are reuseable for over 1000 washes and costs on average 3p per wash.

There are no harsh chemicals so less pollution. Rinse cycle can be shortened saving water and electricity. Ecoballs will not fade bright colours or damage clothing fibres. Hypoallergenic so suitable for sensitive skins/eczema (including babies and children). Eco-ball softens clothes even in hard water. As your clothes will be softer no fabric conditioner is necessary.

Also anti-bacterial and kills Escherichia Coli and Staphylococcus Aureus.Includes free refill pellets and a stain remover. Imagine not having the hassles and expense of carting bulky powders and liquids home from the supermarket ever again!

Green Mums review:  We regularly use Eco Balls, especially with darker washes and for washing nappies.  If you use them to wash nappies this avoids any problems with powder build up that you can get with detergents.  We probably use detergent for around 2 out of 5 washes and Eco Balls for the rest.  Eco Balls work well with darker washes but we tend not to use them for white washes.  Obviously they contain no chemicals and bleaches so they are not going to get your whites sparkling white!  They do manage to get most stains out of nappies, what they can't really cope with is things like tomato and grass stains.  Don't forget to line dry your nappies when you can because the sun will also help to bleach out any stains.
